Nonyanita Café: A Fresh Take on Peranakan Cuisine

Nestled within the culinary hub of Chef X, Nonyanita Café is the brainchild of Chef Jean Tan, who brings her love for Peranakan cuisine to the forefront with a bold, modern twist. This residency, running from 23 March to 17 May 2026, is a love letter to the heritage flavours of Peranakan, reimagined in a fresh, approachable way. Chef Jean’s vision is to make Peranakan food more accessible, and her menu is a testament to that.
At Nonyanita Café, traditional Peranakan dishes take on new forms, such as grain bowls, sandwiches, and soups, all infused with nostalgic flavours. The menu boasts a vibrant lineup of lunch and dinner staples, crafted to be enjoyed on the go or savoured in the café. Standout dishes include the Chicken Rendang Sandwiches, Assam Fish Grain Bowls, and Papaya & Prawns Titek Soup – all familiar café staples with a Peranakan twist. The grain bowls, in particular, take centre stage, with their colourful presentation and variety of toppings, each element homemade and paired to highlight the rich, layered notes in each bowl.
Nonyanita Café is more than just a dining experience – it’s a celebration of tradition and innovation. Chef Jean’s passion for preserving the soul of nostalgic Peranakan cooking shines through in every dish, and her menu is a testament to the evolution of tradition without losing its soul. With its welcoming atmosphere and creative take on Peranakan cuisine, Nonyanita Café is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the bold, vibrant flavours of this beloved Singaporean heritage.
The Nasi Ulam Grain Bowl (S$20): is particularly close to Chef Jean’s heart. Its cooking process is a labour of love, taking up endless hours to complete, as each component is arduously handled by hand. Chef Jean fondly recalls making it with her mother, waking up at 5am to cook the rice, giving it time to cool down (as the rice used in Nasi Ulam is served at room temperature) and preparing the multiple ingredients in time for lunch.
